Spring 2013: New Hours

Please check out our new hours! M-Th 1p-8p   Fri 10a-3:30pm  Saturday 10am-1pm.

Why hydration is important.

When you're dehydrated, the amount of fluid in your entire body is decreased and that includes the fluid that's in your blood vessels," says Dr. Mike Patrick, an emergency physician at Nationwide Children's Hospital. "So you have decreased blood volume. That leads to decreased blood pressure. When your blood pressure gets to a certain point, you're unable to get enough blood up to the brain. If you're not getting enough oxygen to the brain, that can cause you to pass out and it could cause you to die.

Ibuprofen Side effects: It's an NSAID(non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug)

DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM:
Ibuprofen belongs to a class of drugs called
(NSAIDs). Other members of this class include aspirin,
(Aleve),
(Indocin),
(Relafen) and several others. These drugs are used for the management of mild to moderate pain,
, and inflammation. Pain, fever, and inflammation are promoted by the release in the body of chemicals called prostaglandins. Ibuprofen blocks the enzyme that makes prostaglandins (cyclooxygenase), resulting in lower levels of prostaglandins.

Tears and injuries to ligaments and tendons. What do you do?

When there is a significant tear in a muscle, tendon or ligament there are a few options.   In such instances a chiropractor would refer you out to another physician.   Surgery has been there for extensive injuries, but for some, other options are  available.  There's prolotherapy and PRP therapy.  PRP is Platelet Rich Plasma therapy.  Here's an article on PRP therapy  that is interesting.  About 60% of the patients repsonded favorably. I thought it would be higher, but this is one viewpoint.  http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=platelet-rich-plasma-therapy-dennis-cardone-sports-medicine-injury

Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis
(Also Called 'Cervical Spondylosis')
Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which one of the bones of the spine (vertebrae) slips out of place onto the vertebra below it. If it slips too much, the bone might press on a nerve, causing pain. Usually, the bones of the lower back are affected.
The word spondylolisthesis comes from the Greek wordsspondylos, which means "spine" or "vertebra," andlisthesis, which means "to slip or slide."

Hydration: Pay Attention to the Toilet

Pay Attention to the Toilet
As the temperature climbs and you spend more and more time sweating, your risk for dehydration will increase. Even slight dehydration makes exercise harder than it has to be. The best indicator of hydration is your urine color. Urine should be a pale yellow color without a strong odor. The goals are to start exercise with pale colored urine and to produce pale urine within an hour of finishing your workout.
If you are noticing dark-colored urine following workouts, you need to drink more throughout your workout. However, if your urine is clear or if you have to stop repeatedly to use the restroom during exercise, you are drinking more fluids than you need and you can back off on your intake.

Mid-summer Chiro blog

While going on vacation to hot destinations, remember that water, salt and potassium are your friends to stay hydrated http://www.konaseasalt.com/about-kona-sea-salt/hawaii-sea-salt-and-your-health/206-the-sodium-potassium-pump.html

2:1 ratio of Salt to Potassium is fine, especially for athletes.  although those with high blood pressure may try closer to a 1:1 ratio.  If you can't tolerate NaCl (sodium Chloride) there are alternatives such as KCl ( Potassium Chloride). http://www.3fatchicks.

Natural pain killer - White Willow Bark

Natural alternative for pain killers: White Willow Bark. Aspirin is derived from this. It contains Salicin which is easily absorbed in the liver where it is converted to Salicylic Acid which helps with the pain. We carry 'Pain X' that also contains a blend of herbs and proteolytic enzymes to promote healthy inflammatory responses. http://www.bio-genesis.com/productpages/pain-x/pain-x.html. http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/willow-bark-000281.htm
